虎徹の切れ味、御覧じろ!
Behold the sharpness of a Kotetsu!
PERSONALITY
He's cheerful, friendly, and childish. Official twitter describes him as being, "naive, innocent, and able to befriend anyone." This is so true, he even announces that he would be willing to befriend the enemy if they would let him. He loves families and remarks how nice it must be to have many brothers, even if you aren't related to blood. The last part alludes to the fact that one of his older brothers is a counterfeit sword and thus, not directly related to him, but he loves him all the same. Across canon sources, his only wish is for his brothers to get along. For New Year, he wishes for his brothers to get along and in the anthology, he dreams of being able to enjoy a meal with both of them.
Being one of the younger sword spirits and a designated little brother sword in his current family, he's used to being treated as such. Combined with his status as a family treasure, he's fairly spoiled and sheltered. He's used to being treated well and wants to be taken care of. In practice fights, he asks his opponents to go easy on him and whines when they don't. He's confident in his skills as they are and as a result, slacks off during practice only to whine loudly when he's hurt. That said, he is actually a hard worker and tries his best at his chores and duties. He isn't lazy... he just wants to have fun first.
His spirit is shaped by his sword's story and history and since it's distinguished by the carving of Urashima Taro on the blade, some of his personality comes from the story. He has an animal companion-- a small turtle named Kamekichi (Lucky Turtle). He's super fond of it considering the two are connected... but not so connected he can't help losing track of it from time to time. He's also very imaginative and likes to playfully talk about visiting the dragon king's palace and finding treasure. Believing the story to be real, he has a fantastic imagination and believes dragons, magical princesses, and enchanted castles to be real. He's also always searching for treasure boxes and as thrilled as he is by what he may find, he is also wary in case of any unfortunate magic within. Urashima Taro saved a turtle from being bullied, Urashima himself hates bullies and is quick to defend those who are being picked on.
He can come off as whimsical and spacey as a result of his imagination and it's easy to not take him seriously. But he's a good spirited boy with a true heart and clear mind. Through his eyes, he can easily make observations others might struggle to see. Though his brothers fight, he understands that they truly love each other and understands that this is a secret. When he wishes for his brothers to get along, he wishes for them to do it openly and not so secretly.
Despite his soft nature, he changes in battle. He enjoys fighting and often laughs and jokes as he charges at the enemy. Through all of his laughter, he proudly and casually announces how he'll cut up and slice the enemy easily. He's a gentle child but in battle, he won't hesitate to stab the enemy and he'll do it with a cheerful smile. Still, even in the most serious battles, he whines when he's hurt showing that he's still the same boy even in the thick of it. The more serious the battle, the more serious his attitude.
Should the player opt to send him on his kiwame journey, he matures somewhat. Prior to kiwame, he has a poor grasp on obvious things in the mortal world. For example, if you let him break in battle, he fails to realize that he's dying and expresses confusion over what is happening. After kiwame, however, he grasps his new mortality and the significance of his death on others. Understanding that others will know he's died, his last wish is for the player to still tell everyone that he's gone on a journey instead of died so that no one will worry.
Post-kiwame journey, he also settles into his role as a sword warrior. He no longer complains of the shiver down his spine when he goes into battle and instead announces that now isn't the time for fear. Instead of looking for shortcuts in battle for the sake of making things easier, he tries to find the shortest path to surprise the enemy.
Don't be fooled by his new confidence and maturity, though. He's still as whimsical as ever and dislikes being hurt.
HISTORY
I'm Urashima Kotetsu. A wakizashi passed down from generation to generation of the Ikeda clan that ruled Tottori domain, carved with Urashima Tarou's image ...Uh, I'm a legitimate Kotetsu, alright?
Urashima Kotetsu was originally a wakizashi smithed by the famed swordsmith, Nagasone Kotetsu. Kotetsu swords were famous for their fine craftsmanship and were notoriously sharp. However, due to their popularit, many counterfeits were made. Many counterfeits were so convincing, Kotetesu himself was said to struggle telling his swords apart from the imposters. Urashima, however, was a verified authentic Kotetsu and one of his earliest works at that.
Before the smith achieved fame, he owned a scrap metal shop. There, he accepted any scrap metal people would give and turn them into new goods. He was a smith during times of peace and there was no need for weaponry so he tried to make a living creating armor from old helmets and nails. It was said that the smith claimed he could make something out of anything but this is actually more along the lines of self-deprecating humor than true pride. While he boasted he could create new works from anything, he was also desperate for resources due to his poor conditions.
Inspired by the legend of Li Guang— a master archer from China who pierced a rock with his arrow believing it was a tiger— the no name smith went back to smithing swords. Pouring his heart into his craft, he signed his works "Kotetsu" meaning "tiger" and "pierce."
But things did not improve. Kotetsu faced long periods of misfortune and could not sell many of his swords. It was said he had to carry many of his swords because he could not sell to any samurai.
One day, rogues entered a samurai household and the only samurai was a senile old man. Instead of reaching for a treasured sword, he grabbed an ordinary sword he could use without fear of damaging. He cut down the thieves and struck a stone lantern which split in two. The lantern was made of a soft rock but a stone lantern was a stone lantern. The nameless sword was called "Lantern Cutter Kotetsu" and the Kotetsu name quickly spread through out Edo. Kotetsu finally found fame.
Urashima Kotetsu was forged well before Kotetsu ever achieved fame. In fact, Urashima is one of Kotetsu's earliest works having been forged back when Kotetsu was merely a "scrap iron smith." Why Kotetsu carved Urashimatarou onto the blade is a mystery but it was an old story from the Nihon Shoki days and was common decoration on armor and such.
During the Edo period, the sword was passed down to the Ikeda Clan in Tottori Domain where it became a family treasure that was passed down from generation to generation. As a family treasure, he wasn't used for fighting and was more of a status symbol for the family. Eventually, he went on to a private collection.
Urashima Kotetsu still exists today but is difficult to see.
Due to his generic origins and the private nature of his history, not much isn't known about it but in canon, the year is now 2205. At some point, Urashima's sword is obtained by the Kebiishi and must be won by the saniwa's army. Upon being won/rescued, his spirit is given a human form and he joins the army to protect history from those who seek to change it.
Interestingly, he was initially paired with the sword of Kondou Isami, Nagasone Kotetsu. Despite bearing the name of the smith himself and being the most famous of the Kotetsu swords, Nagasone is a forgery. Urashima, however, does not care and gladly calls Nagasone his dear brother even if they are not related by blood.
At some point in canon, the player has the option to send Urashima on a journey or sorts— "kiwame." Many swords use this journey to achieve great things— like confront their past, come to terms with their lingering grief, or find greater purpose. Urashima, however, merely desires to learn if Urashima Taro was a real person or not. He is truly a happy sword blessed with a simple history. Returning to the Edo Period, he stays with Kotetsu. During his stay, he is able to watch the smith create him and wonders if he should feel moved because he feels nothing beyond interest. Bothering his smith with childish questions, he asks the smith if Urashima is real. Kotetsu merely replies if he thinks Urashima is real then he is. Finding his answer, Urashima returns home after three days, stronger than before.
INVENTORY
URASHIMA KOTETSU 13in (33.9cm) wakizashi engraved with a carving of Urashima Taro. An authentic Kotetsu sword, it is signed by the smith, Nagasone Okisato (Kotetsu) and dated "on a day of the 12th month of Manji three." Kotetsu swords are famous for their ability to cut and are often referred to in pop culture.
KAMEKICHI A mysterious small turtle that is never too far from Urashima. Normally on his shoulder, she appears to be in a constant state of sleep but also aware at the same time. Has an unshakeable bite. She has a fluffy tail,
suggesting she is actually a minogame-- a 10,000 year old turtle said to bring good luck and health to others. Her name literally means "Lucky Turtle."
